Welcome -
Celtic Bards are
Gordon Mooney
and Nancy Lyon
Hell's Kitchen is an unlikely
place to find an angel playing
the harp, but one fateful night in
1973, while working as a
journalist for New York
Magazine, Nancy was
bewitched by the wild strains of
Celtic Music, so she enrolled in
a woodworking class and built
a harp based on the 14th
Century Trinity College Harp in
Dublin.
Since then Nancy's Clarsach
has been her passport to
adventure as she travelled
throughout Europe, America
and Canada acquiring tunes and
techniques from top players and
performing in folk clubs,
concerts, festivals, for radio and
TV and on street corners from
New York's Fifth Avenue to
Dublin's Grafton Street.
Nancy has many strings to her
harp, for apart from her
instrumental skills, she is an
inspired singer, travel journalist,
author, passionate teacher and
communicator. She has taught
whistle and harp in New York,
Montreal and Ireland where she
lived for 3 years and was
traditional music columnist for
'In Dublin' magazine. She has
captured some of her musical
adventures and travels in her
book 'Scatter the Mud; A
Travellers's Medley'.
Gordon has played the Highland
bagpipes since he was enchanted by
them as a wee lad of seven, and
became lost in the world of grips,
birls, torluaths, tachums, crunluaths
and the pipers quest for the 'perfect
reed'. He has devoted many years to
exploring, performing and recording
the instruments and music of
Scotland and has published several
tune collections and tutors, including
a history and celebration of the
Scottish wedding. Gordon is also
known as a master of Scottish
bellows blown bagpipes. In the late
1970's he became interested in
bellows bagpipes and unable to find
or buy one, made his own set.
Having led the revival in interest
both in the bellows bagpipe and their
music with his publications and
recordings he has gone on to perform
in many prestigious events and
venues, and to teach and lecture to
students of the bagpipe and Scottish
music in both Europe and North
America. He is a scholar of the
music and an outstanding player. His
knowledge of piping spans many
centuries and many styles.
